UndergraduateYear 33 creditsCore major
Starting from the basic concepts of thermodynamics (system, state, property), this course builds the ability to analyse real engineering systems with the first and second laws. It centres on Rankine-cycle steam power systems, which matter most in nuclear engineering, and weighs efficiency and loss from an exergy standpoint.
By the end of this course
- 01Distinguish a thermodynamic system from a control volume, and describe the energy crossing the boundary.
- 02Evaluate properties from tables, charts, and software to compute state variables accurately.
- 03Apply the first and second laws to closed and open systems to determine the work, heat, and efficiency of engineering devices.
- 04Quantify where irreversible losses arise, through entropy generation and exergy destruction.
- 05Analyse steam and gas power cycles, and explain how design variables such as reheat, regeneration, and pressure ratio improve performance.
